To 80% Market Share of Generic Drugs

Since the cost of pharmaceuticals in social security expenses continues to increase in Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare aims to suppress the social security expenses by accelerating market share of generic drugs.

Therefore, the Ministry decided the policy to increase the market share of generic drugs* to 80% by 2020.

In addition, the Ministry will support the development of generic drugs related to "biopharmaceuticals" that produced by gene recombination and animal cells.

*A generic drugs is a medication that has exactly the same active ingredient as the brand-name drug (original drug) and yields the same therapeutic effect and are cheaper than it. Generic drugs can be sold only after expiration of the patents relating to the original drug.
